Himeji Otemae-dori Illumination 2026–2027 to Illuminate Himeji with Approximately 510,000 Lights
The “Himeji Otemae-dori Illumination” will be held from November 20, 2026, to January 11, 2027, around Himeji Station and Himeji Castle in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. Entering its fourth year, the illumination event will expand its area and feature approximately 510,000 LED lights, an increase of 260,000 from the previous year’s 250,000.
Set against the backdrop of Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the event will create a winter nighttime atmosphere through an expanded display of lights across the city. This article introduces the event and its highlights.
Lighting Design Supervised by World-Renowned Lighting Designer Motoko Ishii
The concept of “Atarayo” refers to a night so beautiful that one wishes it would never end. This year’s event is supervised by world-renowned lighting designer Motoko Ishii, who will create a lighting experience designed to complement the atmospheric illumination of Himeji Castle. The number of LED lights will increase to approximately 510,000, more than doubling from the 250,000 used last year as the event expands in scale.
A 2.5-Kilometer Corridor of Light
The event will create a corridor of light stretching approximately 2.5 kilometers, beginning with a photo spot near Himeji Station inspired by the white heron, a symbol associated with Himeji Castle, and extending mainly along Otemae-dori and through Himeyama Park.
The program will include a sea-of-clouds lighting display at Sakura-mon Bridge, a lighting show at Himeyama Park, and a water-mirror installation at San-no-maru Square. These installations will incorporate local cultural and scenic resources unique to Himeji into the nighttime experience.
Nighttime Water-Mirror Experience at San-no-maru Square, Himeji Castle
At San-no-maru Square within Himeji Castle, the nighttime illumination program “Atarayo no Yumekagami” will be presented as part of the Himeji Castle illumination event. Organized by the Himeji Convention & Visitors Bureau, the program will feature a water-mirror installation in which images and light are projected onto a water surface, creating a changing scene that shifts over time.
The installation will also incorporate a central mirror-ball display and a tree-lighting installation using white LEDs on a large ginkgo tree, creating a space inspired by the white heron associated with Himeji Castle.
Related Events Adding Light to Himeji’s Winter Nights
A range of related events will take place during the illumination period. A lighting ceremony will be held in front of Himeji Station on November 20, followed by the Himeji Station North Bustling Exchange Plaza Illumination from the same day through December 28.
An event commemorating “Good Couple Day,” which is celebrated in Japan on November 22, is scheduled to take place at Himeyama Park on November 22. A Christmas market is also scheduled to run from December 18 to 25, excluding December 21.
On December 19 and 20, Otemae-dori will become a pedestrian-only area, with special lighting and other presentations planned along the street.
Funding Through Crowdfunding and Corporate Advertising
To support the operation of the event, the government crowdfunding campaign “Himeji Illumination 2026: Lighting Up Himeji’s Winter Together” will run from August 20 to November 20, 2026. The campaign has a fundraising target of JPY 2 million, with contributions allocated to the illumination project. As a donor benefit, a nighttime guided tour around Himeji Castle is planned, during which a castle specialist will explain the site’s history and cultural significance.
Encouraging Wintertime Circulation and Longer Stays in Central Himeji
The “Himeji Otemae-dori Illumination” introduced in this article is expanding its event area and promoting the appeal of local tourism resources, with the aim of encouraging visitors to explore more of central Himeji and extend their time in the area.
With support from a wide range of stakeholders, the event seeks to strengthen its appeal as a signature winter attraction and foster local pride. The atmospheric illumination beginning on November 20, 2026, is expected to offer visitors a distinctive nighttime experience in Himeji.
