Expressing Different Visions of Space
Minamitane Town in Kagoshima Prefecture is home to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Tanegashima Space Center, Japan’s largest rocket launch complex. It is located south of mainland Kagoshima Prefecture, approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo in a straight line.
Launched in this area, the Tanegashima Space Art Festival has been promoted through community-wide efforts as an initiative to reconsider space from the perspectives of science, technology, culture and art. It provides visitors with time to feel closer to space and develop a sense of anticipation for the future.
Part 1, November 21–22: 15 Works to Be Exhibited at Uchugaoka Park and the Surrounding Area in Minamitane Town
A total of 15 works are scheduled to be exhibited in and around the park, including large-scale works and projection pieces designed to stand out against the darkness of night. Stage events and food trucks featuring local ingredients will also be available. A special live performance by a band led by New York-based jazz drummer Rintaro Mikami is also scheduled for November 21, transforming the park at night into a reception venue.

Part 2, December 5–6: A Planetarium Inside a Sea Cave
Hamada Beach and Chikura no Iwaya, a natural cave formed by wave erosion, will serve as the venues. Inside Chikura no Iwaya, the “Cave of Stars” event will be held at night when the spring tide coincides with the new moon. The event will use MEGASTAR, developed by planetarium creator Takayuki Ohira. Ten million stars will be projected onto the rocky walls of the sea cave, providing an immersive art experience unique to the location, where visitors can listen to the sound of the waves while surrounded by a sky full of stars.
A total of eight works, including large-scale projections and performances, will also be presented on the beach outside the cave. Bonfires will be lit on the beach, and drinks will be sold at the beach house. Advance ticket purchases are essential because admission is restricted for safety management and due to the characteristics of the space.

The Festival Is Rooted in Astronomer Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot”
The festival presents its message to society through the distinctive theme of “space art,” based on the idea expressed in “Pale Blue Dot” that humanity should view Earth and itself from the perspective of space and act with humility and responsibility. Local residents work together in fields including education, welfare, food and industry, with the aim of creating new forms of social prosperity.
