Toei Uzumasa Eigamura rebrands as “Uzumasa Kyoto Village”; Phase 1 opens March 28, 2026 — a full renewal into an immersive park for adults

Toei Uzumasa Eigamura Co., Ltd. has announced a full renewal of the entire “Toei Uzumasa Eigamura” facility as it marks its 50th anniversary this year. Phase 1 is set to open on Saturday, March 28, 2026, and the facility will be renamed “Uzumasa Kyoto Village (UZUMASA KYOTO VILLAGE)” in conjunction with this launch. Under the new concept “Lose yourself in Kyoto of the Edo period,” the park will be reborn as an “immersive experience park for adults,” designed especially for visitors in their 20s and 30s. A major highlight is the start of night operations, which is expected to help address challenges in Kyoto’s nighttime tourism.

An immersive park where you “lose yourself in Kyoto of the Edo period”

The reborn “Uzumasa Kyoto Village” aims to be a new, sensibility-stimulating immersive park for adults. Art staff from Toei Kyoto Studio—known for films such as “The Legend & Butterfly” and the drama “Ōoku (The Inner Chambers)”—will recreate the streetscapes of the Edo period with striking realism. Through staging and hands-on experiences that let visitors feel Edo-period Kyoto with their own senses, guests can immerse themselves fully.

Immersive contents that transport you beyond the everyday

The renewal will introduce multiple experiential contents. In an immersive live show where the village itself becomes a living Edo town, visitors won’t just watch—they’ll find themselves drawn into the story as part of a new kind of entertainment. Cultural experiences will also be offered, allowing guests to learn and practice Japanese arts—such as tea ceremony, flower arrangement, Noh, and Kyōgen—authentically yet accessibly with instructors in the Edo-town setting. A ninja attraction will invite playful, small-scale adventures, delivering ever more surprises and discoveries the more you participate.

A kimono experience will let visitors change into their favorite kimono and stroll the Edo streets, deepening immersion as a special escape from the everyday. Further details are scheduled to be announced in February 2026.

Refreshing the facility name and brand colors

The intent behind the new name “Uzumasa Kyoto Village”

With the Phase 1 renewal opening, the facility name will change from “Toei Uzumasa Eigamura (TOEI KYOTO STUDIO PARK)” to “Uzumasa Kyoto Village (UZUMASA KYOTO VILLAGE).” Uzumasa is a special place that can be called the very history of Japanese cinema—a sacred ground where the studios of eight film companies once stood together. The name change reflects a desire for visitors to feel more broadly and deeply the film culture and regional history cultivated over many years. The inclusion of “KYOTO” in the English name makes it easy to understand for overseas visitors, while “VILLAGE” conveys the idea of human connection and the succession of traditional culture.

Brand colors that symbolize tradition

In conjunction with the renewal, two new brand colors have been established: Sumi-iro (墨色) and Kinu-iro (絹色).
Sumi-iro is a black that evokes the ink of Japanese tradition and the darkened screen in film. It has been adopted as a color for signage that harmonizes with Kyoto’s traditional streetscape and as a hue that recalls the rising excitement before a film or stage performance begins.
Kinu-iro is an off-white with a slight yellow tint, like refined silk. Because silk weaving—the origin of Kyoto’s Nishijin textiles—was introduced by the Hata clan and their base gave rise to the place name “Uzumasa,” Kinu-iro is positioned as a color symbolizing Kyoto’s tradition and the history of Uzumasa.

Launching night operations to meet new after-dark demand

As one of the highlights of the renewal, night operations will begin. The current closing time of 17:00 is planned to be extended to 21:00. Although Kyoto is one of Japan’s leading tourist cities, it has been pointed out domestically and internationally that there are limited facilities to enjoy at night. Uzumasa Kyoto Village views this situation as an opportunity to create cultural experiences and will open its one-and-only Edo-period townscape at night. The park will roll out content and events that showcase the unique atmosphere and immersion of nighttime, offering a new option for evenings in Kyoto.

“Taste of Kyoto”: new dining spots and shopping

Food stalls you can enjoy while strolling

Under the theme “Taste of Kyoto,” everything from long-established to up-and-coming notable eateries will gather to offer Japanese flavors that engage all five senses. Ten walk-and-eat spots will also be set up for visitors to enjoy while strolling the town. New dining venues are slated to include:

  • “SAWAI SHOYU with Key Stone” (a new concept by a soy sauce maker founded in 1879, offering soy sauce–inspired sweets and foods)
  • “Mimikou” (founded in 1969; curry udon with a focus on dashi)
  • “Akairo Maguro” (creative tuna cuisine direct from Yaizu Port)
  • Kyoto Brewing Co. (craft beer)
  • “Kyoto Niohmon Gozaru.” (wagashi/Japanese sweets)
  • “SASAYAIORI + Uzumasa Kyoto Village” (a Japanese café by the long-established Sasaya Iori, founded in the Edo period)
  • “zarame – gourmet cotton candy –” (Kyoto cotton candy specialty shop)
  • “Uno-ya” (Kyoto delicacies dining)
  • “Torisei” (Kyoto’s first yakitori specialty shop, founded in 1966)
  • “Uzu-chaya” (company-operated takeout shop)

Shops where tradition meets the present

To offer a shopping experience featuring Japanese items available only here, three retail stores will newly open. “AZUMA-DO” will carry Japanese tableware and kitchen items, presenting traditional Mino-yaki infused with a contemporary spirit. “SOU・SOU,” under the concept of “creating a new Japanese culture,” will offer items for modern life made with traditional materials and techniques. At the company-operated concept shop “Souvenir Shop” (working title), guests will find select Kyoto small goods and original Village items.

Renewal schedule

The full renewal will proceed in stages. Phase 1 is scheduled to open on Saturday, March 28, 2026. Phase 2 is planned for spring 2027, adding five new food and retail outlets and opening a Yūkaku (red-light district) zone. Phase 3 is planned for spring 2028, with the opening of a playhouse “Nakamura-za” (working title). Plans for a bathing facility are also in progress for 2028 and beyond.

Uzumasa Kyoto Village as Kyoto’s new tourism hub

The full renewal into “Uzumasa Kyoto Village” is a large-scale project aimed at creating new cultural experiences within Kyoto tourism. In addition to its daytime appeal as an “immersive experience park for adults,” the start of night operations is expected to significantly contribute to enhancing overall tourism spending and visitor satisfaction in the region. While inheriting the history of film culture, the new “Uzumasa Kyoto Village,” aligned with contemporary needs, will offer an extraordinary experience to domestic and international visitors alike and is poised to become a new tourism hub in Kyoto. In the MICE domain, potential uses include incentive tours and as a unique venue.
