JR East to Introduce New Overnight Limited Express “Luna Azul” in Early FY2027: Seasonal Services Planned Between Shinagawa–Aomori and Shinagawa–Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi

Japanese Mobility

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has announced that the name of its new limited express train, designed to offer a new railway travel experience, will be “Luna Azul.” The train is scheduled to begin operation in early fiscal 2027.

To embody the philosophy behind JR East Group’s management vision, “Yusho 2034,” which aims to bring vitality to local communities and contribute to a richer Japan, the company will introduce limited express rolling stock capable of overnight operation, where the act of riding itself becomes part of the travel experience.

The project reinterprets the emotional appeal once associated with sleeper trains through the lens of contemporary values.

Reviving Overnight Rail Travel Along the Sea of Japan Corridor

The new service will operate in two distinct seasonal patterns.

From spring through autumn, Luna Azul will operate as an overnight limited express connecting Tokyo with northern Japan. Departing from Shinagawa Station, the train will stop at Tokyo, Ueno, and Omiya before following the Joetsu Line and Uetsu Main Line to Akita, Hirosaki, Shin-Aomori, and its final destination, Aomori Station.

The route recalls the historic Sea of Japan railway corridor. Trains are scheduled to depart at around 9:00 p.m. and arrive in Aomori at approximately 9:30 a.m. the following morning, with a journey time of approximately 12.5 to 15 hours.

The southbound service will stop at Takasaki Station only, a timetable feature likely to attract railway enthusiasts. The train is scheduled to operate two round trips per week. Formed of 10 cars, it will accommodate 125 passengers. During extended stops at intermediate stations, passengers will also have opportunities to step outside for short refreshment breaks, offering an experience unique to long-distance rail travel.

Winter Daytime Service Designed for Kusatsu-Bound Demand

During the winter season, Luna Azul will switch to a daytime limited express service between Tokyo and Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station in Gunma Prefecture.

The train will operate between Shinagawa, Shibukawa, Nakanojo, and Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi, with six round trips per week and a journey time of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.

For daytime operation, Cars 4, 8, and 9 will not be included, resulting in a seven-car formation. However, because private compartments can accommodate more passengers during daytime travel, the train’s overall capacity will increase to 150 passengers.

According to JR East, this flexible operating plan is intended to balance seasonal demand while reducing operational uncertainty caused by off-peak travel periods and heavy snowfall along the Sea of Japan coast. At the same time, it allows the railway to capture steady tourism demand for hot spring destinations in the Greater Tokyo area.

According to the press release, additional operating areas and routes may be considered in the future.

Private Accommodation Designed for a Wide Range of Travel Needs

The interior of Luna Azul has been designed around private accommodations, with every passenger space consisting of either a private compartment or a shared lounge.

The standard Luna Comfort Green Car private compartment features a flat sleeping surface measuring approximately 90 cm wide and 195 cm long. These compartments will be located in Cars 2–3 and Cars 6–9.

Passengers seeking additional space can choose the larger Luna Comfort Wide, while the Luna Comfort Grande accommodates up to four passengers. Two accessible Green Car private compartments designed for wheelchair users will also be available in Car 6, reflecting the train’s commitment to barrier-free accessibility.

Premium Private Suites Designed for Long-Distance Comfort

The highest-class accommodation, Luna Premium, will be located in Cars 1 and 10 at the front and rear of the train. These Premium Green Car private suites provide flat sleeping surfaces ranging from approximately 110 cm to 200 cm in width and are designed to maximize comfort during long overnight journeys.

At the center of the train, Car 5 will feature the Luna Vista Lounge, a shared space where passengers can leave their private compartments to relax, socialize, and enjoy the passing scenery.

The lounge will also include a retail area offering beverages and light meals featuring regional specialties.

A New Kind of Railway Journey in an Age Defined by Efficiency

With the introduction of Luna Azul in early fiscal 2027, JR East is proposing a new style of travel in which the journey itself becomes the destination.

According to the press release, the fare for a trip between Shinagawa Station and Aomori Station in a Green Car private compartment is expected to be “approximately the cost of a Tohoku Shinkansen Green Car fare plus an additional premium.” The pricing reflects the value of the overnight travel experience rather than simply transportation between two destinations.

JR East also stated that it will consider expanding operations beyond the routes announced at launch. As the network develops, Luna Azul is expected to attract not only railway enthusiasts but also travelers seeking a slower, more immersive travel experience in which time itself becomes part of the journey.
